Vol. 111 “Thunder Road”- Bruce Springsteen

“Thunder Road”…Bruce’s love serenade to Mary asking her to ride together with him on the exciting highway of life.  22 years ago today Courtney and I began our trip down that road and today I share my rendition of the Boss’ “Thunder Road” in honor of our anniversary.

Love you Court!

Thunder Road

The screen door slams, Mary’s dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey, that’s me and I want you only
Don’t turn me home again, I just can’t face myself alone again
Don’t run back inside, darling, you know just what I’m here for
So you’re scared and you’re thinking that maybe we ain’t that young anymore
Show a little faith, there’s magic in the night
You ain’t a beauty but, hey, you’re alright
Oh, and that’s alright with me
You can hide ‘neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now, I ain’t no hero, that’s understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey, what else can we do now?
Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
Well, the night’s busting open, these two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, heaven’s waiting on down the tracks
Oh oh, come take my hand
We’re riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Oh, Thunder Road, oh, Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey, I know it’s late, we can make it if we run
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Sit tight, take hold, Thunder Road
Well, I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk
And my car’s out back if you’re ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door’s open but the ride ain’t free
And I know you’re lonely for words that I ain’t spoken
But tonight we’ll be free, all the promises’ll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines rolling on
But when you get to the porch, they’re gone on the wind
So Mary, climb in
It’s a town full of losers, I’m pulling out of here to win

Vol. 110 “Running To Stand Still”- U2

Great things are timeless.  The U2 song “Running To Stand Still” speaks about the horror of heroin addiction, so relevant now in the face of the current opioid epidemic, as it was 30 years ago when it was released on the “The Joshua Tree”.  Today I share my rendition of this song recorded March 2017-June 2017, at The Land of Hope & Dreams studio, in honor and prayer for those who have recovered, those who still struggle and the many people who work hard to help others heal from this hell.  Thanks for listening!

Happy Independence Day!

Running To Stand Still

And so she woke up
She woke up from where she was
Lying still
And said I gotta do something
About where we’re going
Stepped on a steam train
Stepped out of the driving rain, maybe
Runs from the darkness in the light
Singing
Ah la la la dey dey
Ah la la la dey dey
Ah la la dey dey

Sweet little sin
Bitter the taste in my mouth
I see seven towers
But I only see one way out

You gotta cry without weeping
Talk without speaking
Scream without raising your voice
You know I took the poison
From the poison stream
And I floated outta here
Singing
Ah la la la dey dey
Ah la la la dey dey
Ah la la dey dey

She runs through the streets
Her eyes painted red
Under a black belly of clouds in the rain
In through a doorway she brings me
White golden pearls stolen from the sea
She is raging she is raging
And a storms blows up in her eyes

She will
Suffer the needle chill
She’s running to stand still

Vol. 107 “Yahweh”- U2

cropped-image5.jpg

The last song from U2’s “How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb”, me at 3 AM, recording it during January, safe and secure the studio.  A prayer in the way that only U2 can deliver.  It’s one of the few, if only, songs with bassist Adam Clayton listed first as the writer of the song.  Thanks for listening!

Yahweh

Take these shoes
Click-clacking down some dead end street
Take these shoes
And make them fit
Take this shirt
Polyester white trash made in nowhere
Take this shirt
And make it clean, clean
Take this soul
Stranded in some skin and bones
Take this soul
And make it sing, sing

Yahweh, Yahweh
Always pain before a child is born
Yahweh, Yahweh
Still, I’m waiting for the dawn

Take these hands
Teach them what to carry
Take these hands
Don’t make a fist, no
Take this mouth
So quick to criticize
Take this mouth
Give it a kiss

Yahweh, Yahweh
Always pain before the child is born
Yahweh, Yahweh
Still, I’m waiting for the dawn

Still waiting for the dawn, the sun is coming up
The sun is coming up on the ocean
This love is like a drop in the ocean
This love is like a drop in the ocean

Yahweh, Yahweh
Always pain before a child is born
Yahweh, tell me now
Why the dark before the dawn?

Take this city
A city should be shining on a hill
Take this city
If it be your will
What no man can own, no man can take
Take this heart
Take this heart
Take this heart
And make it break
